The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) founded in 1966, is a voluntary consensus organization which promotes knowledge and use of medical instrumentation. It creates standards, educates and certifies technicians, and publishes technical documents, books, periodicals, and software. AAMI membership is over 6,000 individuals and 375 organizations.

Focus

Committees of manufactures, health care professionals, regulators, scientists, academics, and other interested parties research and develop new or revise existing Recommended Practices and Standards that address the use, care and processing of devices and systems. Committees also develop standards for manufacturers that recommend the labeling, safety, and performance requirements to be met by products they produce.

Although AAMI is a voluntary organization, its Recommended Practices and Standards are considered to be a major resource of health care guidelines, and noncompliance with these standards is cited by regulatory organizations that inspect health care facilities.
