Assam University is a teaching-cum-affiliating university. The university has nine schools which offer Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Technology and Management Studies. There are 29 departments under these nine schools. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have 51 undergraduate colleges. Drawing its faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education.

Facilities

  • Hostels: Hostel facilities for the students or research scholars are available in one Gents' Hostel and one Ladies' Hostel. Apart from these, privately run hostels are available in the nearby Irongmara and Dwarbond areas.
  • Computer Centre: One Computer Centre on the campus is available for students and the academic community.
  • Transport: Two buses ply between Silchar and the campus (about 20 km from the town) daily to bring the students from Silchar town and return them. Besides this, chartered buses for staff serve Silchar and the campus.
  • Major scientific equipment: With one-time assistance from the UGC and funds from other agencies like DST, DAE and CSIR, the science departments have procured the following state-of-the-art instruments:
  1. Department of Physics: LCR meter (HP 4263), Meade computerised 16" telescope, FTIR spectometer
  2. Department of Chemistry: UV-VIS spectrometer, polarizing microscopy, Pyris 1 DSC system.
  3. Department of Ecology & Environmental Science: OXi Top BOD determination system, laser leaf area meter, Anderson sampler.
  4. Department of Life Science: Leica-Leitz trinocular phase contrast microscope, CO2 incubator, PCR system, growth chamber.
    • Library: Assam University Central Library has a holding of 52,557 books. The library subscribes to 13 foreign and 186 Indian journals, 16 newspapers, and 12 popular magazines. Assam University Library was selected by U.G.C. for automation and networking under the INFLIBNET

      programme in 1998-1999. The library automation is under progress and a database of 25000 books have already been created using SOUL software provided by INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad. Besides the Central Library, most of the departments have their own library for ready reference by the students.
