Asrul was a productive writer and film producer who produced many well-known literary works such as Tiga Menguak Takdir (compilation of poems with Chairil Anwar and Rivai Apin), Dari Suatu Masa dari Suatu Tempat (compilation of short stories), and Naga Bonar (film).
