Career

He was born to a poor family in a small village in the outskirts of Medellín

 in 1912. He would go on to boxing for a short time, and later completing his post-secondary studies in Argentina in the area of urban architecture. While in Argentina, he fell in love with a woman who later carried his child. Given their situations, they would never see each other again once he completed his studies.

Later he married and had 10 children. His wife would eventually succumb to cancer. His second wife, Lucila Torres Toro, with whom he had two daughters, survives him.

, then known as Unión. This was his second attempt at football, his first being with Club Huracán, now defunct.

Atlético Nacional would become the first Colombian team to win the Copa Libertadores. Although he was not able to celebrate given his distance, as he resided in Canada during that year, 1989, that day was long awaited.

He would work hard to instill the passion and love for his "Verdolagas" in his grandchildren, of which he has 5 surviving in Canada.

He died on December 10, 2003, after battling various ailments, with his family at his side.
