. He was the son of Nathaniel de Rothschild
(1812–1870) and Charlotte de Rothschild
(née de Rothschild) (1825–1899). He was a prominent philatelist and published a book on the subject. He also collected rare tapestries and on his death bequeathed valuable artworks to The Louvre
. He was also interested in yachting and provided prize money for the America's Cup
. He died of heart faliure in his armchair in Monte Carlo at the age of 53.
