Shallcross played for his native Leek and was also a match referee before becoming Stoke manager in February 1919. He never really hit it off with the supporters, especially after transferring Charles Parker

Under Shallcross the team had one or two good spells, yet only avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth in 1921, Twelve months later however he had turned things round completely as he led the potters to the First Division. Sadly from his point of view, results started to go wrong and relegation was suffered. This led to Shallcross resigning is march 1923. He was in charge of team affairs for 162 League games, of which only 56 were won. He died in Stoke-on-Trent
