Before turning to popular fiction, Mayor held several jobs, both in the US and in France, working as an editor, researcher for Time–Life books, photography and journalist. He also worked for the University of Texas Press in the late 1970s, where, as Special Projects Editor, he found and caused to be published THE BOOK OF MERLYN, the hitherto barely known conclusion to T. H. White's famous THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING.

mystery series. Since then, a new novel has been published every year, typically in the fall. Mayor devotes much of the year researching various components of his novel, in addition to working as a death investigator for the Vermont State Medical Examiner's office and as a deputy for the Windham County Sheriff's Dept. He also volunteers for his local Fire Department and EMT squad.

Joe Gunther Book Series

  • Open Season (1988) - Joe Gunther investigates the murder of an innocent man, that re-opens the disturbing Harris murder case.

  • Borderlines (1990) - Joe travels to the fictional town of Gannet. Quickly strange and violent happenstances occur, that have ties to a local cult.

  • Scent of Evil (1991)

  • The Skeleton's Knee (1992)

  • Fruits of the Poisonous Tree (1993)

  • The Dark Root (1994) - A text-book Asian home invasion happens in the quiet Vermont town of Brattleboro. This perks Joe's interest in a tangled, Asian, criminal ring called the Dark Root.

  • The Ragman's Memory (1995) - When the remains of young woman are found in the woods Joe must figure out why she was killed and by who.

  • Bellows Falls (1996) - Joe Gunther investigates a sexual assault charge against a police officer in Bellows Falls. Later they have a drug case on them, involving teen criminals, drug running and cold blooded murder.

  • The Disposable Man (1997) - An un-identified man with Slavic appearances is found face down in a quarry. All the tags are cut off his shoes. This dumping soon gets Joe tangled in a web of spies and treachery.

  • Occam's Razor (1999)

  • The Sniper's Wife (2002) - Joe Gunther's friend and colleague, Willy Kunkle, leaves for NYC to investigate the death of his ex-wife.

  • St. Albans Fire (2005) - An arsonist hits Vermont hard and Joe must bring him to justice.

  • The Second Mouse (2006)

  • Chat (2007) - An internet predator is found dead. Joe is also struggling with an attempt on his brother and mothers lives.

  • The Catch (2008) - Joe investigates the murder of a police officer on a routine stop. This murder unravels a case of drug smuggling in Maine.

  • The Price of Malice (2009) - A child predator has been stabbed to death in someone else's apartment. Joe must investigate this, while coping with his new girlfriend's need for justice in the murder of her father and brother.
  • Red Herring (2010) - Three seemingly unrelated murder scenes, each featuring a single drop of blood from an unknown and untraceable source. The murderer's signature? It takes a trip to Brookhaven National Laboratory for Joe Gunther to find out.
