The school runs education and sports programs; as the school is part of the Patriot Athletic Conference (schools that feed into Stevenson), along with Daniel Wright Junior High School, Twin Groves Middle School, West Oak MIddle School, Fremont Middle School, and Woodlawn Middle School. The soccer team was undefeated in 2007. The facility operates as the chief middle school of School District 102, and houses the seventh and eighth grades; Meridian Middle School, also located in Buffalo Grove, feeds into it. The school was built in the 1970s after the original Aptakisic-Tripp School was torn down. It served grades K-8, until 1979 when Pritchett School was built. By the late 1990s the school began only serving kids of grades 7 and 8, once the Tripp School was built. An unfortunate event gave Aptakisic statewide news coverage in 2005 when a girl stabbed her friend during class. The victim made a full recovery.
The school's curriculum includes a Spanish class (two levels: advanced and normal rate) and there are extra classes for those whose second language is English.
Also, it has many advanced mathematics classes (Pre- Algebra Survey, Pre- Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2). It also has a school newspaper (The Insider), and a variety of athletic clubs, and also contains a fitness center with treadmills and workout machines. The school has two gyms, a small gym and a large gym and in one wing of the school is the district office.
