New York Times reviewer Villiers Gerson faulted Olivers's "uniformly quiet, underwritten style," declaring the "cumulative effect" of the stories was "emotional monotony; too cerebral for more than mild entertainment, they are clever fugues written in a minor key." The Hartford Courant
