Andy Russell, was a famed conservationist
and author
who had a passion the wilderness. He was also a noted outfitter, mountain guide, photographer, television broadcaster and story teller. In 1976, he received the Julian T. Crandall Award for his efforts in conservation and in 1977 he was honored with the Order of Canada
from the Governor General with approval from the Queen.

He was married to Anna Kathleen Riggall with whom he had four sons and a daughter. One of his sons, Charlie Russell
, carried on his work. He described his education as "limited formal education, considerable rocky mountain variety." but, with little formal education, he went on to write many books including "Grizzly Country", "Horns in the High Country", "Trails of a Wilderness Wanderer, and "Adventures with Wild Animals".
Russel died on June 1, 2005 in Pincher Creek
at age 89.
