in 1857 and studied law. During the Civil War

in the First Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry. He resumed his law studies. He was admitted to the Tennessee bar
in 1867 and commenced the practice of law in Nashville, Tennessee

Counties, Tennessee from 1870 to 1878. He served as a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives
in 1880 and 1882.
Caldwell was elected as a Democrat
