Andre Stitt

Andre Stitt is a performance artist. Stitt's family moved from Belfast in the early 1960s and spent his early life in Seymour Hill, Dunmurry, near Lisburn, where he attended Dunmurry High School before going to Art College. Stitt moved to England soon after graduating from the Belfast College of Art, which later became part of the University of Ulster, in 1980 and has steadily built a reputation as one of Europe’s foremost live artist. He is currently director of the Time Based Art course at Cardiff School of Art. He is also known for his work as a curator of Time Based art events and galleries such as recent Cardiff art in time festivals and the Trace Gallery. The most predominate theme in his artistic output is that of communities and the dissolution of them and he often relates back to the city of Belfast and the 'Troubles' it was going through during his upbringing.
Stitt gained national attention in 2003 over his performance 'White Trash Curry Kick', part of a series of works awarded £12,200 in public funding. The performance, in which Stitt was to kick a carton of take-away curry through Bedford
town centre on a Saturday night, was eventually cancelled because of crowd safety fears.
Stitt has published a number of books that include - Homework: Scores, Statements & Notes for Askshun 1976-2000 (Krash Verlag, Cologne); Small Time Life(Black Dog Publishing); South of No North: Works 2000-2002 (Sirus, 2002)
