Adams is a bowling allrounder, who is a hard-hitting lower order batsman. His career began to decline in 2002 when a back injury saw Jacob Oram
jump ahead of him in the allrounders queue. Adams was part of the New Zealand side that made the Super Sixes of the 2003 World Cup but soon afterwards fell out of favour with the selectors. He remained in the cricketing wilderness until he was selected in New Zealand's ODI squad for the 2004 NatWest Series in England.
Adams' last ODI was in 2007 against Sri Lanka
where he remains.
He finished as leading wicket-taker in first-class cricket at the end of the 2010 domestic season and is first-change bowler for the club in the current, 2011, season.
