Hussain was appointed Director-General Weapons in 2008 and Director (Precision Attack) and Controller of the Navy in March 2009.

He was recognised in the Muslim Power 100 List as one of the most influential Muslims in the United Kingdom. He was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2011 New Year Honours.

In 1983 Hussain married Wendy Downer; they have three children: Sam, Zara and Hannah. The family is based in Bristol.
