Amicus (charity)

Amicus is a United Kingdom-based non-profit organization headquartered in London. The charity aims to assist those facing capital trial and punishment around the world, particularly in the United States, by providing them with proper legal representation and advocating their basic human rights. The charity was founded in 1992, in memory of Andrew Lee Jones
who was executed in Louisiana in 1991.

Amicus collaborated with the Middle Temple
Library to ensure that the UK public had access to US constitutional and capital punishment criminal texts. In addition, Amicus provides experienced lawyers to argue before international courts. The jurisdiction of the Privy Council

Mission Statement and Main Activities
The Mission Statement of Amicus is to:
"promote the relief of suffering and distress to those persons and families of those persons who are awaiting execution in any state of the United States of America and who, for reasons of their poverty, are in need of legal or other assistance to ensure the preservation of their rights of appeal and to ensure that their imprisonment is administered, so far as is possible, humanely. "
Main Activities
Aside from hosting frequent charity social events, such as wine-tastings, academic panel discussions, often featuring prominent speakers (see list below), pub quizzes and dinner dances, Amicus focuses on four main activities to promote their cause.Internships
Amicus arranges volunteer placements with US capital defence attorneys' offices. Between October 2004 and May 2007, Amicus through the funding of Lime 2004 http://www.amicus-lime.com/home.html, placed 53 interns across America for internships between three and eighteen months. Case Work
At the request of capital defence attorneys, Amicus has drafted amicus curiae briefs for a number of American courts, including the United States Supreme Court. Amicus case-workers also draft motions for use before and during trials and appeals, such as motions against the use of gruesome photographs.
