for many years and views her as a close friend and sister. She was addicted to painpills and crashed Dereks car when she was high. When she came home, she overdosed and was dead for three minutes. Derek saved her life, but was and still is angry with her. Amelia ended up sleeping with Derek's best friend Mark Sloan following in the footsteps of her sister Nancy and her ex sister-in-law Addison Montgomery after making peace with Derek following his own shooting.
When Charlotte is attacked and raped, Amelia is out with Cooper and Sam, but after receiving a visit from Violet, she comes to Charlotte's aid and confides in Charlotte about her addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol along with stitching up a laceration on her arm. Later, when Charlotte and Cooper try to rekindle their sex lives, when Charlotte breaks down and cannot go through with it, a drunken Cooper puts the moves on Amelia who rebuffs his advances telling him to go home to his fiancée. Cooper eventually tells Charlotte about his interaction with Amelia and though Charlotte confronts her, they remain good friends. Charlotte asks Amelia to be her maid of honor in the episode "Something Old, Something New". At the wedding reception Amelia asks for a glass of ginger ale
instead of champagne but by accident gets champagne, which she spits out. By the end of the season, Amelia relapsed into drinking habits and refused to get the help suggested by Charlotte. Charlotte tries to intervene with meetings but Amelia skips the meetings. Later, Charlotte discovers Amelia operated on a patient while she was under the influence and as a result, Charlotte revoked all of her medical privileges.
Amelia's friend with Huntington's disease returns from Italy and requests Amelia's help with physician assisted suicide. Pete and Sheldon disagree over Amelia's decision to help her. Later, Amelia and Pete discuss Pete's past when he reveals he once assisted a dying patient. Later Amelia begins a benzodiazepine injection on her friend who has an adverse reaction and requests to be saved before she stops breathing and she rushes her to the hospital where Pete tends to her friend. Shortly after discovering her friend had completed her own suicide after being rescued, Amelia consumed what is believed to be several OxyContin pills she palmed after discovering the friend's body. Soon afterwards, Amelia spirals further down into drug addiction. Charlotte, knowing what she has been through as she can relate tries to help but to no avail. Later, Amelia meets Ryan and the two begin a sordid affair with both using drugs and Amelia writing prescriptions for them on a regular basis.She spirals down son far to the point that she begins snorting crushed pills with Ryan. Later, when Amelia shows up after 12 days, the entire practice is hostile towards her and Addison slaps her. Amelia reveals she and Ryan are engaged. She also tells everyone she is clean and they begin to believe her until Charlotte sets them straight. The group stages an intervention and Amelia even snorts Oxy right in front of them. They appear to be getting through to her until Ryan shows up wearing Amelia's fathers watch. Apparently Amelia along with her brother Derek saw their father murdered for that very watch. Addison is livid when she sees Ryan wearing it. Amelia lashes out at everyone and leaves with Ryan. Later, Ryan thinks rehab may be good for both of them and they talk about having children, two boys and two girls so no one will ever feel alone. They then agree to shoot drugs one last time. Amelia awakens to a cold Ryan and is shocked and horrified to find that he is dead. She takes the watch back before the body is taken away and she tells the police to call Addison as she is ready to go to rehab.
While in rehab, Amelia befriends an 18 year old addict. When she rejects visitors,such as Sheldon who drops by; Haley tells her that she should be grateful that people are visiting her as she has no one visiting her. During rehab, Amelia finally breaks down over her guilt in Ryan's death as she realizes she didn't make him take the pills. Later Amelia accepts Sheldon's visitation offer and they discuss the past as Amelia can't face anyone and is ashamed of her behavior. Towards the end of her rehab, Amelia tries to make amends with her family (the entire practice). Later, Haley returns to rehab having suffered a severe relapse. As Amelia prepares to leave rehab after sixty days, she says goodbye to Haley and goes home where everyone has gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving. Amelia surprises everyone and asks if there is room for her where Charlotte replies, "We can make room". Sheldon offers her a seat beside him.

Amelia Shepherd is the youngest sister of Dr. Derek Shepherd, and like her brother, she is also an excellent neurosurgeon whose ambition in proving herself equal to her brother is only surpassed by her surgical skill. Graduating in the top of her class at Harvard and completing her surgical residency at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Shepherd came to Los Angeles on a medical case and decided to stay. Amelia first appeared in season three, brought in to consult on a surgery at a hospital with Addison Montgomery. Amelia manages to bring the surgery about but butts heads with the hospital board, leading her to be fired. She soon begins to hang around Oceanside Wellness, annoying Addison a bit with her free-living attitude but also giving advice on Addison's relationship with Sam. Amelia was also the surgeon who operated on Dell after the car crash.Season 4
As season 4 begins, Amelia is reluctant to visit her brother, Derek, when he is shot but Addison eventually encourages her to go to Seattle. On the way, Amelia has an in-flight romance with a man with a brain tumor and brings him to Seattle Grace for surgery. She and Derek bicker constantly over the surgery, bringing up old issues between them but manage to settle things. She also has a one-night stand with Mark Sloan. Returning to Los Angeles, there is a merge going on between the two practices.
