 on 4 August 1898 as the Ligue Internationale des Associations Touristes (LIAT) but changed its name to the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) on 30 May 1919.

Membership of the Alliance is limited to motoring organisations, and not open to individuals. According to the AIT website, the organisation claims 140 members in 101 countries.
