History

Alfhausen was created 974. The name Alfhausen comes from the Low German

 and means "Eleven houses". The exact history is however unknown. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic. However there are also different religious communities in the town. The town was under the rule of the Kingdom of Hanover

; it was named for its closeness to the municipality of Alfhausen. As a popular trip goal for holiday travelers and Ausflügler, the lake has won great importance in the last years. The retention basin was extended in the 90's by a second in order to receive water from a larger catchment area.

The newly renovated church built in the 13th Century is one of the main attractions for couples to marry here. See with dignity church was partly built in gothic times, such as the Bentheimer Taufstein. Moreover, some 16th-century buildings still stand in the old local centre.
