History

Alexandria's post office was established in 1880, and the city later incorporated in 1885. The city was named for railroad president Alexander Mitchell.

The town's VFW Teener team captured the VFW State Championship in 2007. Also the towns football team, the Hanson Beavers, captured the school's first ever state championship in 2005. The town's High School Basketball team, then called the Alexandria Beavers, won the State "B" Championship in 1963 and 1965, settling for first runner up in 1964. Since 2005, the Hanson Beaver Football Team has captured four state titles and are currently back to back to back champions winning in 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
