Pishvanov became interested in aviation while studying engineering. He became a pilot in 1913. He began World War I as an infantryman, but quickly switched to aviation. While attached to the 10th Fighter Detachment, he used a Nieuport 21

 to shoot down five enemy planes between 21 March and 7 July 1917. On 11 July, he was wounded in combat, losing fingers from his right hand. He was removed from battle, although within the next couple of years he would serve with the White Russians

In 1926, Pishanov emigrated to the United States to work for Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation

 as an engineer. He later changed employment to work of Seversky. He died an American citizen in 1966.
