Taste
Taste is one of the traditional five senses. It refers to the ability to detect the flavor of substances such as food, certain minerals, and poisons, etc....

, ingestive behavior and alcohol intake. His studies are based on genetic variation
Genetic variation
Genetic variation, variation in alleles of genes, occurs both within and among populations. Genetic variation is important because it provides the “raw material” for natural selection. Genetic variation is brought about by mutation, a change in a chemical structure of a gene. Polyploidy is an...

strains; he uses mice with contrasting phenotypes for genetic analyses. The goal of these analyses is to find chromosomal locations of genes involved in taste-related behavior, with an ultimate goal to identify the molecular identity of these genes using the positional cloning approach. In addition, Dr. Bachmanov uses physiological and behavioral techniques to better understand mechanisms responsible for genetic differences in taste-related behavior.
