conducting summertime races from April to mid-September near "the Butte" a few miles south of Palmer, Alaska

. Nearby Pioneer Peak looms over the finish line, providing one of the most scenic racing venues in the region.

GEORGE H. McCULLOUGH began the development and cleared the land for Alaska Raceway Park near Palmer, only to be stopped by the 1964 Alaska earthquake. He moved his family west of Talkeetna to the Cache Creek area to mine for gold in 1967.
