He was drafted into the League of Ireland International squad in Aberdeen for the quadrangular tournament with England, Scotland and Wales in 2004. 2005 was his highlight for Kildare County. He picked up the Supporter's club player of the Year and the Person of the Year awards. Byrne made his 100th appearance for Kildare County in the 2006 season, becoming only the third player ever to play over 100 games for Kildare since the club's foundation in 2002.

Byrne finished as a First Division runner-up with Shelbourne in 2008, where he made 17 league and cup appearances due to an ankle injury. Byrne departed Shelbourne at the end of the 2008 season to rejoin former club Monaghan United on 27 January 2009.signed again for another season after picking up the supporters player of the year award 2010.
