living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.65.
In the village the population was spread out with 17.7% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 24.8% who were 65 years of age or older. History
Alamance played a significant role in the development of the textile industry in the South. In 1837 Edwin Michael Holt, son of a local farmer, built the Alamance Cotton Mill at Alamance. Holt's mill produced the well-known 'Alamance Plaids,' the first factory-dyed cotton cloth produced south of the Potomac. The Holt family subsequently built scores of mills across the state, as well as becoming involved in banking, railroads, politics and other ventures.Geography
