History

In 1985, Nazarene leaders began discussions with the Kenyan Commission for Higher Education. This commission, after hearing the church's proposals, recommended the Church start a liberal arts university. In 1987, Nazarene missionary Dr. Harmon Schmelzenbach coordinated the purchase of 70 acres (283,280.2 m²) of land in the Maasai Plains. In January 1990, at the recommendation of the Commission for Higher Education, Dr. Stephen W. Nease, the Africa Nazarene University Trust was organized with a board of trustees. On November 23, 1993, after three years of preparing a proposal for the University, the Commission for Higher Education granted a Letter of Interim Authority to operate a university. This meant that ANU was the first university to seek a charter under the Kenya 1985 Universities Act. Africa Nazarene University is currently one of the best universities in East and Central Africa. The current Vice-Chancellor of the University is Professor Leah Marangu.
