Sustainability

Aedas’ Sustainability Design Group provides specialist consultancy services on the implementation of sustainable design from briefing and masterplanning to concept design, procurement and building management. It offers expertise in assessing the lifecycle impact of building solutions, the packaging of building products and transport to site, as well as end-of-life reusability.
The Group has developed the practice sustainability strategy and has created a number of tools and resources to support the design process. Whilst the Aedas Green Book summarises practice policy and actions, the online Aedas Green Tool supports architects’ workflow, coordination with consultants and the sharing of project experience across design teams. They are complemented by Design Guides that assist designers in communicating sustainability, incorporating systems for sustainable design, specifying sustainable materials, and achieving compliance with legislation and standards.
The Sustainability team is engaged in industry collaborative research such as CarbonBuzz and the Tall Building Simulation model. Its members are regular speakers at national and international sustainability conferences and events. The group has been a partner in the Waste Minimisation Design Review Exemplar programme and is an active contributor to the UKGBC’s Code for Sustainable Buildings Technical Task Group.
Aedas has been ranked in Engineering News Record’s ‘Top US 100 Green Design Firms’ for 2009 and was shortlisted in 2009 for the Architect’s Journal AJ 100 Awards in the ‘Most Sustainable Practice’ category.

Origins

Aedas was established in 2002 with the partnership of LPT Architects in Hong Kong and Abbey Holford Rowe in the UK to become Aedas LPT and Aedas AHR respectively. Following a merger with TCN Architects of Birmingham in 2003, the name Aedas was adopted for all areas of the practice with the LPT and AHR being dropped from the Hong Kong and UK practice names later in 2003.
