Adrara San Rocco

Adrara San Rocco is an Italian town of 865 inhabitants of the province of Bergamo in Lombardy . The town is located about 25 km east of the city, situated in the small valley, through which river Guern flows.
The town is part of the Mountain Community of Monte Bronzone Sebino.

In those years the whole province of Bergamo was devastated by the fratricidal conflict between the Guelph
and Ghibelline. There was a considerable immigration of groups of people taking refuge in these remote and quiet areas. But soon fighting broke out here, so that a castle was built to protect the inhabitants from the incursions of the villagers. Many were the battles, including the distinguished Giovanni Fermo of the Alessandrini, who had many victories against the Ghibellines.
During the fourteenth century, the territory fell under the domination of the Calepio family, who took possession of most of the valley. The following century saw the arrival of the Venetian Republic that put a definitive end to the factional struggles. It was a period of calm, and Adrara, experienced peace and saw the flourishing economic activities, with a consequent increase in population.
Then, territorial conflicts developed between the upstream village further upstream, the parish of San Rocco,with the downstream village, the parish of San Martino .
Thus, in 1668, the territory of Adrara was divided iton two different entities: Adrara San Rocco and Adrara San Martino, but lingering matters took a century to work out. The formalisation of the division is dated from 1754, and ended with the awarding of five ninths of the land to the community of San Rocco, and the remaining four ninths to that of San Martino.
Eugenio Donadoni was born in San Rocco in 1870, and became a famous literary critic and author of biographies of many Italian authors and poets.
The parish church, dedicated to San Rocco, dates back to 1539 and was restored during the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries here is a long staircase to the entrance outside, and inside frescoes, among which those made by the workshop of Francesco Capella
.
There is also the Shrine of Saint Faustino and Saint Giovita, better known as the sanctuary of the dead of Bondo
. Built in the fourteenth century it has some important works.
