He was the second son of 2nd Duke of Cambridge

 and the actress Louisa Fairbrother and was born January 30, 1846. His parents subsequently went through a form of marriage in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772

. For many years he acted as equerry to his father, and in 1904, the year in which the Duke died, he was gazetted a K.C.V.O.
