In January 2008, Leadership paper reported that Abubakar Tanko Ayuba was one of the first senators to have his election nulified, but that he was appealing the decision.

In September 2008, he was awarded the prestigious 'Nelson Mandela Gold Award' for his excellent leadership and contributions to society.
In a May 2009 mid-term assessment of senators, This Day newspaper rated noted that Ayuba had not sponsored any bills and was not always around due to ill-health, although he was present for the number of days set by the constitution.
