AIX Records
Encyclopedia
AIX Records is an independent record and media label
based in Los Angeles
, California
. It was founded in 2001 by Dr Mark Waldrep, a professor of digital media arts at CSUDH, classically trained composer and audio engineer. The label was founded to take advantage of the new high definition, surround music format known as DVD-Audio
. The label specializes in producing new recordings and currently has over 50 releases available in the DVD-Audio/Video format.
AIX Records is probably the only record label that has not released any compact disc
s, focusing instead on high definition audio (using sample rates of 96 kHz and word lengths of 24-bits) and 5.1 surround
music mixes. All of the tracks found on their products were captured during a single "live" session using state of the art digital equipment. Their recording approach is unusual and purist in approach. They avoid artificial equalization, dynamics processing and digitally created room ambience, opting for a natural balance and real room reverberation
. There are no overdubs used in the creation of their releases.
Virtually all of AIX Records releases have accompanying video of the sessions as well as additional bonus features. All titles produced in the past three years have been shot using high-definition video
equipment.
The quality of their work has been recognized by audiophile magazines and trade organizations. In 2005, the Consumer Electronics Association
awarded Mosaic written and performed by Laurence Juber
on his release Guitar Noir the first Demmy Award for Best High Resolution, 5.1 Music Track.
