A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies is a premier social research institution established in 1958 by an Act of the Government of Bihar
. It is named after Bihar Vibhuti Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha
, one ofthe architects of modern Bihar and first Deputy Chief Minister

. It was inaugurated on the 31st of January, 1958, by Dr. Rajendra Prasad
, the first President of India
and was accorded the status of an autonomous institution in 1964.It was one of the first research institutions in the country to be recognized by the ICSSR
.Its first director was the eminent economist Gorakhnath Sinha, and the legendary Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan
was its first chairman of the Board of Control.

stayed in the Annexe Building of the Institute for about three months during 1947.It also the erstwhile residence of Bihar Vibhuti Dr Anugrah Narayan Sinha.
The institute has a spacious three storied building for Academic and Administrative Complex and attached to this is a separate two storied building for Library. At the ground floor there is a well equipped air conditioned Conference Hall of the capacity of 200 persons with all modern gadgets – moving camera, LCD Projector, and sound system. There is another air conditioned round table Seminar Hall -1 with a capacity of 100 persons equipped with all modern facilities. On the first floor of the Institute, there is the office of Director and Registrar and separate working room for every faculty. This floor has also an air conditioned small committee room of the capacity of 50 persons equipped with modern gadgets and an air conditioned Lounge for small meeting. The administrative office is located on the second floor of the main building.
There is a Hostel-cum-Guest House which provides accommodation to visiting scholars. The Director, Registrar, some senior members of the faculty and essential staff have been provided with residential quarters on the campus.
Various Issues and problems within above frame are identified and analysed to find their solutions.
Apart from consolidating the research activities, efforts have been made for providing certain basic amenities like improved library services, reprographic facilities, duplicating facilities, conference and public address system, audio-visual appliances etc.

Objective
The research interest of the Institute broadly converges on development and change.Endeavour have usually been made towards studying the mechanisms and processes of change in the wake of development, within appropriate theoretical and conceptual frame.Various Issues and problems within above frame are identified and analysed to find their solutions.
