Activated in 1958 as an intermediate command echelon of Strategic Air Command, providing command and control, manning, training, and equipping of B-52 Stratofortress
Strategic Wings in the Southeastern United States to conduct long range bombardment missions from January 1959 – September 1966. Managed conversion of SAC MAJCOM Strategic Wings to USAF AFCOM wings, providing wings with combat historical lineage. The division conducted numerous staff assistance visits and monitored tactical exercises such as Operations Spruce Up and Chrome Dome. During the Cuban Missile Crisis
in November 1962, the division and its subordinate units assumed an increased alert posture.
Inactivated along with closure of Turner AFB in 1966. Subordinate wings reassigned to 57th Air Division.
