at the European Southern Observatory
(ESO). It is named in honour of retired astronomer Robert J. Miller (born 1950) of the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO). He joined the USNO in 1972, and worked on the six-inch transit circle programs and became one of the most prolific observers in that telescope's 100-year history. From 1996 until his retirement on January 2, 2006, he worked in the Nautical Almanac Office.
