Roger, along with Ray and Larry, seek to help Stan find his first victim, his "one". Stan attempts to kill people at bars and poison a group of alien fanatics, to no avail. A child molester named Randy moves into the neighborhood and takes prurient interest in Steve and his friends, whom willingly walk into his van as a means to mock at Stan's inability to kill others. Stan, Ray, and Larry track them down at a water park, Randy's former workplace. When Stan attempts to arrest Randy, Randy notes he would get bailed from prison quickly because he has a good lawyer and his mother is rich. Stan decides that this is unacceptable and shoots him. Due to his horrific aim, however, he accidentally shoots Larry. When the dying cohort commends Stan, Stan realizes he found his "one", and the rest of the family's views on Stan return to normal.

Production

"42-Year Old Virgin" was written by Nahnatchka Khan and directed by series regular Pam Cooke. This would be the first episode of the third season
American Dad! (season 3)

that would be directed by Cooke.

Censorship

After the scene where Francine covers herself and goes to bed because she lost interest in having sex with Stan, the DVD version adds a part where we hear the sound of a vibrator. Francine says, stumbling through the words, that it is her pencil-sharpener, and she is "sharpening my... pencils for my... meeting tomorrow". This was the first episode of American Dad! to receive a 15 certificate from the BBFC instead of the usual 12 certificate(from that point on, the future American Dad DVD releases received a 15, but if not for the crude nature of the commentaries and this episode, the set would've been a 12), due to the plot point where Steve and his friends are abducted by a child molester and the scene with Francine using a vibrator for masturbation (which was cut on American TV, but not in the UK).
