Roger Federer
was the defending champion but Berdych knocked him out in the quarterfinals en route to his final appearance. This was the first time since 2002 that Federer did not make the Wimbledon men's singles final, and the second successive Grand Slam tournament that Federer was defeated at the quarter-final stage, having previously been on a record run of 23 successive Grand Slam semi-finals (of which he won all but three).
For the first time ever at Wimbledon, there were no English players in the men's singles competition, although Great Britain was represented by two players from Scotland
