 of Russia came first with a time of 48.95, a new championship record in the 100 metre backstroke and was within one-hundredth of a second from the world record. After the first 100 metres, Russia was in first place and the United States second. Alexandrov then swam the breaststroke leg in a time of 56.52, faster than Stanislav Lakhtyukhov's time of 57.27. However, at the 200 metre mark, the United States was slightly behind Russia 1:46.40 to 1:46.22. For the butterfly leg, it was a duel against Evgeny Korotyshkin

 and Lochte. Korotyshkin started well. In the first 50 metres of the butterfly, he recorded a split of 22.15, better than Lochte's time of 22.60. But Lochte had a superior back half and finished his leg in 49.17 as Korotyshkin recorded a time of 49.39. After Lochte's leg, the United States was slightly ahead of Russia 2:35.57 to 2:35.61.
