 and represented the concluding game of the season for both teams. The Orange Bowl was first played in 1935, and the 2004 game represented the 70th edition of the Orange Bowl. The contest was televised in the United States on ABC.

This matchup was controversial because it is a rematch of a regular-season game, and also because during the 2004 off-season Miami would join the ACC, the conference which Florida State was already in. In fact, the opening week of the 2004 season featured Miami vs. Florida State, which meant that there were two consecutive Miami vs. Florida State games for both teams.
