series team to break ranks and compete at Indianapolis since the CART
/IRL split in 1996, entering 1996 CART series champion Jimmy Vasser
and reigning CART champion Juan Pablo Montoya
. Defending IRL champion Greg Ray
won the battle for the pole position
, however after becoming the first accident of the race, he finished 33rd and last. Montoya dominated the race, leading 167 laps and becoming the first rookie winner since Graham Hill in 1966, and the first driver to win from the second starting position since Mario Andretti
in 1969. Buddy Lazier
, able to run with Montoya when nearing lap 160, was unable to keep pace during the final 100 miles (160.9 km), and settled for second for the second time in four years. This race also featured Lyn St. James
(in what proved to be her last Indianapolis 500 start, and her first since 1997) and Sarah Fisher
on the grid. Although they crashed together on lap 71, they were the first duo of female drivers to start the same Indy 500.
