  • Teams in a group will play against each other once and against teams in the other group twice; 11 games per team; Teams are then seeded by basis on win-loss records. Ties are broken among point differentials of the tied teams. Standings will be determined in one league table; teams do not qualify by basis of groupings.
  • The top five teams after the eliminations will advance to the semifinals.
  • Semifinals will be two round robin affairs with the remaining teams. Results from the elimination round will be carried over. A playoff incentive for a finals berth will be given to the team that will win at least five of their eight semifinal games.
  • The top two teams (or the top team and the winner of the playoff incentive) will face each other in a best-of-seven championship series. The next two teams will qualify for a best-of-five battle for third place playoff.

Notable occurrences

  • Defending champion Swift was off to an unblemished 5-0 start, led by last year's best import Ronnie Thompkins, the temperamental Thompkins was suspended for two games for physically harming Pepsi Mega's Rey Cuenco after their game inside the Cuneta Astrodome, Rey Cuenco has filed charges against Thompkins.
  • former national coach Joe Lipa, returns to the Shell bench, replacing Rino Salazar, 7-time best import Bobby Parks, was accused of deliberately throwing games following Shell's 100-99 loss to San Miguel Beer towards the end of eliminations on July 31, in order to eliminate Tondena 65 Rhum.
  • For failing to reach the finals of the Commissioners Cup, San Miguel Beer, tasked to represent the Country in the Asian Games, conceded the Third-Place trophy to Swift after Game One, and instead carry the national team colors as part of their preparation, amateur standouts Marlou Aquino, Kenneth Duremdes, Dennis Espino and Jeffrey Cariaso joined the team in tune-up games against the Swift Mighty Meaties.
