. It began with the team trying to improve upon its 3–11 record from 1977 under head coach Walt Michaels
. The Jets finished the season with a record of 8–8.
This was the first season for a new logo with the "J" styled to have a jet-like appearance. This logo would last until the 1997 NFL season.
