The 100th Aero Squadron was activated August 20, 1917 at Kelly Field, Texas, and trained there until it moved to Mineola, Long Island

 on the October 14, 1917. The unit was then processed through Garden City, New York

, the survivors were reassembled at Winchester

, and trained there until transferred to Feltwell

 on May 5, 1918. Finally the unit was shipped to France on the August 16, 1918. In France it trained as a pursuit squadron, but was reassigned to the bomber role evidently when the new commander took over. Just before its first scheduled combat mission the war ended and the unit was shipped home on May 31, 1919 on the SS St. Louis (1894). The squadron was broken up at Garden City.
