History and Design

Bottleneck handgun cartridge designs experienced early success and have had continuing development since at least the 7.65x25mm Borchardt
7.65x25mm Borchardt
The 7.65×25mm Borchardt cartridge was designed by Hugo Borchardt. It was the ammunition of the Borchardt C-93 pistol. This cartridge provided the basis for the 7.63×25mm Mauser cartridge, which has similar dimensions but a stronger powder charge...

or earlier, which lead to the development of the 7.63x25 Mauser (also known as the .30 Mauser), followed by the 7.62x25 Tokarev. The benefits of bottleneck designs include smooth feeding and chambering and simple, robust headspacing.

The .32NAA is the most recent of a line of commercial bottleneck handgun cartridges. Renewed western interest in bottleneck handgun cartridges began with the .357 SIG

Performance

The cartridge delivers in excess of 1222 ft/s (372.5 m/s) velocity to a 60 gr proprietary bullet from Hornady. This generates 199 ft.lbf of energy from the 2.5" Guardian barrel (1453 ft/s & 287 ft.lbf from a 4" test barrel).

According to industry expert Ed Sanow, the 32NAA: produces more velocity, more energy and more stopping power than any conventional jacketed lead hollow point (JHP) .32 ACP, .380 ACP or .380 ACP (+P) with 15% less recoil (Power Factor) than the (+P); penetrates 8.3" of gelatin after passing through four (4) layers of denim, expanding to a .55" mushroom with a retained weight of 100%; and has a Fuller Index of 62% One-Shot Stops (compared to the 380 ACP Federal 90 gr. Hydra-Shok (53%)).
