First of all, it wasn't a rebellion, but a revolution. A rebellion fails; a revolution succeeds. The American Revolution succeeded.

The alliance with the French was crucial. The united colonies did not have a navy or the manpower to succeed in the war. France supplied men, materiel, and ships. The French sent over troops and officers to command the troops and ships of the line to engage the English navy. At the battle of Yorktown, where the British general Cornwallis surrended, French troops outnumbered American troops three to one. And the French navy sailed up the Chesapeake Bay at just the right time to trap Cornwallis on a peninsula. France poured so much money into the American Revolution that the country was severely in debt, which unfortunately led to the French Revolution a few years later.
