The caterpillers will move away from the milkweed plants and attach themselves to just about anything. I have had them attach to my fence, my patio table, or any nearby plant (other than the milkweed).The milkweed plant is only used to feed the butterfly,attach the eggs,and feed the caterpillers. Then they migrate to any nearby plant or surface that they can attach themselves to.
