Whitman's sexuality is much debated. The concept of homosexuality was new at the time and was not widely discussed in the society at large until late in his life.

His poetry seems to suggest feelings of attraction for men. It's true that Whitman had intense friendships with many men in his life.

Whitman had affairs with women as well, such as Ellen Grey in 1862. Maybe he was bisexual.
