It was more or less a semi Islamic entity with Islam being a religion of choice until it was made the official state religion

NO.
The Persian culture goes back around 6000 BC,There were no Islamic entity ,but so more dignity.
Islam entered in Iran after brutal attack of Arab in 7th.
after that this brutal culture has destroyed the great Persian culture more and more and it turn to Islamic entity.

No it was not. Persia was a fascinating, vibrant and rich ancient culture.

Islam only sprung up like a desert weed in the century of 600AD.
