My ancestor, Sir Robert Barrie and his first cousin, Henry Humphrys "Harry" were onboard the HMS Discovery with the rest of the crew. Robert served as midshipman as well as doing personal secretarial duties for George Vancouver. His first cousin, "Harry" Humphrys, was one of three artists onboard who drew detailed areas of the Pacific Northwest and whose drawings are still seen today.

Thomas Pitt (Lord Camelford) was also onboard, and although he was depicted as somewhat of a spoiled rich boy and a nuisance causing difficulties, many of those onboard felt that George Vancouver (by all accounts) had some serious illness going on and this would put him into fits of rage in which he could be merciless for any minor infraction.

Unfortunately Thomas Pitt received more than what he should have been given for his infractions (lashed to the cannon and the cat o' nine tails administered) several times...this bitter resentment for his treatment burned deep within Pitt for the rest of his life, and lead him to having a quickfire temper.

I belief if any one of us could have put ourselves in the shoes of Thomas Pitt, no doubt we would have caned Vancouver ourselves and would have challenged him to a duel for his mistreatment of his young officers.
