Liberalism in the Presbyterian USA

I grew up in a Church of Christ yet attended the Presbyterian Church (USA) for 16 years. I experienced some great preachers and learned a lot about the Bible.

Once, in a young couples class, the Associate Pastor was teaching and said something that caused my wife to ask, "But doesn't the Bible say...the Word became flesh and dwelt among us?" The Associate Pastor (with some pride) said, "Well, Mrs. Dowling, let see what scritpure says." And he turned to the gospel of John and, sure enough, it read, "...and the Word became flesh and dwelt amoung us." The pastor, apparently feeling a little embarrassed, then said, "Let's not worry about what the Bible says."

Boy did my "antenna" go up! From that point on it became so apparent that liberalism was moving in! The senior pastor would say from the pulpit, "Listen FOR the word of God" rather than, "Listen TO the word of God."

About a year later, we and about 20 families moved out and discovered the Presbyterian Church in America - a conservative, Bible-believing, Christ centered church.

Now, I sadly but not surprisingly, watch the Presbyterian USA church sink deeper into liberalism, admitting gays into the pastorate and across the nation the membership going down...so very sad.

The late Ray Stedman, an evangelical pastor in the Bay Area of San Francisco once said, "People are drowning in man's words and starving for the word of God.

May God have mercy on the Presbyterian Church USA!
