Is there a myth or a foke lore about seeing a black squeirl in the fall that has to do with how bad or good the winter would be?

My grandfather, who died at 95 years in 1985 was an avid outdoorsman all of his life. He always said that an abundance of black squirrel sightings in the fall indicated an above average harsh winter. In my experience, here in upstate NY, ALL the winters seem to be harsh, but there does seem to be some reason to buy into the old gentleman's theory/legend.
