In the past hundreds of thousand years, the co2 ppm went up to about 300ppm then went down. What were the mechanisms for the upswings and downswings? Thank you.

Naturally CO2 is outgased from the oceans via Le Chatelier's Principal in a warming world.

"An action that tends to change the temperature, pressure, or concentrations of reactants in a system at equilibrium stimulates a response that partially offsets the change while a new equilibrium condition is established."

If you change the temperature of the atmosphere, the partial pressure of CO2 in that atmosphere, or the concentration of CO2 the oceans counteract that change through changes in absorption or emission.
